Apple Says iOS 16’s New Haptic Keyboard Option Could Affect Battery Life

Read Time:3 Minute, 54 Second

iOS 16 introduced a new haptic feedback option for the default keyboard. When enabled, iPhone emits a slight vibration after each key is touched while typing, providing physical confirmation that the key was pressed. The feature is a useful addition to the iPhone, but be aware that Apple says it can potentially affect battery life.

“Enabling keyboard haptics could affect your iPhone’s battery life,” says Apple, in a supporting document posted last week. Apple doesn’t provide additional details, so it’s unclear exactly how much battery life the feature uses. Note that Low Power Mode does not disable haptic feedback, so the only option for users who are concerned about the potential impact on battery life is to keep the feature disabled.

Any software feature on an iPhone obviously eats up battery life, but Apple felt it was worth mentioning explicitly because the haptic feedback is noticeable.

To enable haptic feedback for the keyboard, launch the Settings app, tap Sounds and haptics → Keyboard feedback, and turn on Haptic. The same toggle switch can be used to disable the feature at any time. The feature is available on iPhone 8 and later running iOS 16 or later and uses the Taptic Engine within iPhones.
