No one expected Ichiban’s adventures to end after just one outing, and we were right to assume that it did. This shaggy-haired goofball with a heart of gold (and fists of steel) is back for another adventure on the streets of Kamurocho and beyond. However, it looks like another somewhat unexpected face from the series’ past will be joining him in some way. After the series took on the subtitle of Like a Dragon, which was always known as the game in Japan, that moniker has now completely replaced the old Yakuza brand.
like a dragon 8 It will be the direct sequel to Yakuza 7: Like a dragon, which introduced us to the new protagonist of the series, Ichiban Kasuga, as well as the change from a 3D action fighter to a turn-based JRPG. This big change paid off as that game was the best-selling game in the series to date, so a sequel was almost inevitable. However, you can never be sure where this series will go next, narratively or mechanically, so we braved the back alleys of Kamurocho to gather as much information as we could about like a dragon 8.
With the initial announcement, we only got a release window for like a dragon 8which is slated for sometime in 2024. This makes sense as the series usually hits a nearly annual release cadence, and we already have two other games, Like a dragon: Ishin Y As a dragon Gaiden: the man who erased his name, in 2023.
Despite being two or more years behind, like a dragon 8 it’s not going to abandon next-gen consoles just yet. It is announced for PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
The announcement trailer like a dragon 8 it’s pretty short but has a pretty surprising reveal, given the assumed direction the series was taking.
The trailer begins on the familiar streets of Kamurocho with Ichiban’s unmistakable silhouette strutting towards the camera. Depending on how good the translation feature is on YouTube, many voices talk to each other, saying things like, “It’s been a long time, Ichiban.” The translation doesn’t even try to analyze most of the dialogue, due to so many voices. However, you can clearly hear Adachi, Nanba, Saeko, and (we think) Joon-gi and Zhao as well, though it’s hard to tell.
At this point, a second silhouette joins Ichiban. This time, we have subtitles as this second figure says: “I guess we don’t have a choice.” To which Ichiban replies, “Okay, it’s hero time…Kiryu-san!” If the voice hadn’t given him away, we finally see the faces of our two protagonists: Ichiban and a gray-haired Kiryu.
While Kiryu did appear in the previous game, he did not have a main role. It was essentially a boss fight and summon whose purpose was to show the passing of the torch from him to Ichiban as the new protagonist of the series. However, that may no longer be the case if his role in the game is as prominent as his placement in this trailer.
Multiple protagonists are nothing new to the series, with Yakuza 0 exchanging equally between Kiryu and Majima and Yakuza 4 have four playable characters. How this game will handle it, or if our assumptions about Kiryu are completely wrong, will be revealed later.
like a dragon it was the dividing point of the series. From that point on, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios (RGG) explained that the Like a Dragon series would continue to use the JRPG, turn-based style of gameplay, while the new series, Judgment, it would continue the traditional 3D fighting action mechanic that the series was built on. So while we haven’t seen a lick of gameplay yet, it’s almost guaranteed that like a dragon 8 will feature an updated and expanded version of the gameplay we had in like a dragon
Outside of combat, expect to still have a dense area of the city to explore, and Kamurocho will almost certainly be included as one of the explorable areas. There will no doubt be basic mini-games dotted around town, like karaoke, arcade games, batting cages, bowling, and maybe a few new activities to play around with.
Some kind of business or management game is also another feature that most games include that you can usually spend a lot of time on. Whether it’s a cracker business or a real estate company, these side businesses are surprisingly well presented and developed.
2024 is still a long way in the future, plus RGG has two other Like a Dragon games to market and release sooner. like a dragon 8, so don’t expect pre-orders to appear for this one anytime soon. However, once they do, we’ll be here with the details for you.
